The Dolby Atmos Numbering System

The numbering system is 9.1.4 - a three-numbering system with periods in between. The first number represents the number of speakers around the listener. We are used to hearing 5.1 or 7.1 when referring to surround sound. The second number represents the subwoofer. The difference is that Atmos refers to it as the LFE. The distinction is because you can have multiple subwoofers in Atmos. Therefore, the .1 is not the number of subwoofers as it is in surround sound. The last number is the number of speakers above the listener.
